Event narrative

Two to three inches of snow fell across Bartholomew county. Truck driver Terry L. Ingle, 58, of Greentown, died when his semi-truck slid out of control on Interstate 65 near Columbus. The truck crossed the median, opposite lanes, and crashed into brush in a wooded area.

Wider weather episode

Strong upper level low pressure continued to strengthen as it moved toward and into Indiana from the west on the morning of January 7th. Anywhere from three to six inches of snow fell across central Indiana, with the higher amounts of around six inches in the warned counties over west central portions of the state. Interstate highways 65, 70, and 69 all had multi-hour, one-way closures due to multi-vehicle pile-ups. Indiana state police reported working 247 accidents on all central Indiana highways. Two fatalities and eleven injuries occurred with two of the accidents. Hundreds of schools, businesses, and organizations cancelled evening activities on January the 7th. More than 50 schools had at least a 2-hour delay on the morning of the 8th and numerous other organizations cancelled morning activities on the 8th as well.
