High Wind in Salisbury Sound To Cape Fairweather Coastal Area, Alaska

Cape Spenser had a sustained wind of 53 KT at 1900 AKST on the evening of 1/12. Although a marine observation, analysis showed that similar wind was occurring over land. No known damage.

January 11 through January 17th. A 1060 MB super high cell built over the northern Alcan 1/11 and extended to the southeast over the Yukon. Pressure gradients were extreme for gap outflow offshore winds. This pattern persisted for days as a result of a blocking high aloft. On 1/17 a warm front (arctic) moved to the Queen Charlotte Islands associated with a gale center far to the southwest for over-running snow for the southern Panhandle. This low weakened as it moved over the southern Panhandle on the 17th.
