Event narrative

Although land stations showed wind speed only into the 40s, Cape Spencer recorded a gust to 63 KT with many gusts in the 50s. NCEP analyses showed very strong surface pressure gradients along the Eastern Gulf Coast on 11.1. The Fairweather buoy offshore recorded peak wind of 54 KT with 25 FT seas.

Wider weather episode

A storm force low developed rapidly south of Kodiak Island, then moved north into the central Gulf of Alaska on the morning of 11.1. An associated very strong front moved onto the eastern Gulf of Alaska on the afternoon of Tue 11.1.
