Event narrative

A wildfire began on Sunday May 4, and was mostly contained by the next day. This fire ravaged areas south and east of the town of Guthrie. Over 40 structures were damaged or destroyed in addition to at least 4000 acres of forested land. At least one fatality occurred with the fire. The wildfire was put out by Wednesday May 7.

Wider weather episode

Unseasonably hot and dry conditions combined with strong and gusty southwest winds created an environment ripe for wildfires across much of Oklahoma. At least two large fires occurred the first week in May. The largest fire was near Guthrie, where numerous structures burned, and another fire near Woodward caused several injuries.
