Event narrative

A 40 year old male swimming between the first and second sandbars of a mile north of Beach Access 5 on South Padre Island drowned in a rip current. Two other individuals were rescued, both of whom were brought to shore conscious and treated at the scene.

Wider weather episode

Three individuals were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico on South Padre Island, during a day with a moderate risk of rip currents. At 410 pm CDT, a 40 year old male became distressed while swimming between the first and second sandbars of a mile north of Beach Access 5 on South Padre Island. The swimmer was pulled from the surf and CPR was initiated by rescue personnel. While en-route to the hospital, CPR was unsuccessful and the swimmer passed away. At 512 pm CDT, a 13 year old male became distressed while swimming of a mile north of the South Padre Island Jetty. The swimmer was pulled from the surf conscious and EMS personnel responded to the incident. The juvenile was released to the custody of his guardians after receiving treatment at the scene. At 622 pm CDT, an 11 year old male became distressed while swimming at Andy Bowie County Park. The swimmer was pulled from the surf conscious and EMS personnel responded to the incident. The juvenile was released to the custody of his guardians after receiving treatment on scene.
