Event narrative
A 45-year-old woman was struck by lightning as she was about to enter a restaurant on U.S. Route 9 North in Howell Township. She was pronounced dead about one hour later.

A vigorous upper air disturbance in the northwest flow behind the cold front still had sufficient moisture to develop strong to severe thunderstorms across Pennsylvania and New Jersey during the afternoon and the evening of the 17th.
