Event narrative
Shortly before 11:00 a.m, snow squalls developed with the passage of an arctic cold front. Moderate to heavy snowfall with 45 mph winds created whiteout conditions. A multi-vehicle accident occurred just over the Ohio/Indiana state line at mile marker 169 in the west bound lanes, involving 28 vehicles. Shortly afterwards, a 12 car pileup occurred in the eastbound lanes, just a quarter mile to the east. Six people were taken to area hospitals with injuries. The interstate was re-opened by 8:00 p.m.

Snow squalls developed along a frontal passage, creating significnatly reduced visibilities in moderate to heavy snow with wind gusts to 45 mph. Three chain-reaction traffic accidents occurred on interstates 70 and 74, involving approximately 70 vehicles.
