The automated weather observing equipment at the Sparta airport reported a mixture of wintry precipitation during the afternoon of December 25th. This precipitation created icy roads across the region.

The roads were reported to be ice covered at the time of the accident after a weather system produced a mixture of wintry precipitation across western Wisconsin on Christmas Day.
