Event narrative
Light rain and freezing rain during the evening of January 3rd changed to snow during the early morning of January 4th and accumulated 3 to 4 inches county wide by the mid morning hours of January 4th. The snow and ice combined with very strong winds produced widespread hazardous travel conditions.
Wider weather episode
Rapidly deepening low pressure passing offshore of the coast produced widespread hazardous winter weather across eastern North Carolina from the evening of January 3rd through the morning of January 4th. In addition to the winter weather very strong winds occurred along the coast with minor coastal flooding along the Outer Banks. There were two weather related traffic fatalities reported, one in Onslow County and another in Beaufort County.
