What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

The tornado touched down just east of the Alabama/Mississippi state

line and tracked eastward before quickly lifting after it crossed

Tom Gaston Road. The tornado first toppled an irrigation watering

system, and then passed through two private residential properties

where it destroyed a barn, along with numerous broken branches and

a few snapped trees. The most significant damage occurred shortly

after to a private industrial property where three silos and a barn

were destroyed, three empty semi trailers were tipped over, and one

door of a large metal building was blown in and the other blown out.

The wider storm

A powerful storm system swept across the southeast states through the day and into the evening on the 19th. Ahead of this system a warm front brought a very warm, moist and unstable air mass northward across the area. Numerous thunderstorms develop along and south of the warm front and became severe, producing wind damage tornadoes and large hail.

Began near Theodore Idle Hour A (30.5771, -88.3973).
