Severe(D2) drought continued over the western half of the zone with Extreme(D3) drought over the east.

Wider weather episode

Most of southern New Mexico had another month of below normal precipitation in January. All areas except along the border in Luna County, where Exceptional(D4) drought expanded, remained the same as December.
