Event narrative
A peak gust of 72 mph was recorded at San Augustin Pass. Other peak gusts included 65 mph at the White Sands Missile Range Main Post, 64 mph at the Rad Mesonet site on the missile range and 60 mph at the White Sands Museum.
Wider weather episode
A strong upper trough was moving across the Rockies with a strong cold front crossing southern New Mexico. There was also an upper level jet of over 100 knots moving through the region. Wind gusts up to 72 mph were recorded as the trough passed overhead.
