Chase storm history

Law enforcement estimated that 3 to 5 inches of snow fell across Chase County. The snow caused a fatal accident 150 when a female driver lost control of her car, turned sideways and collided with a tractor-trailer. The Daily Union of Junction City contributed to this report.

A 63 mph wind gust was reported near Elmdale. Winds gusted between 50-60 mph from midday through midafternoon.

At 8AM on 9 January a COOP observer reported 6 inches of snow in Cottonwood Falls. This is the only amount reported for this county and is considered the snow total.

Drought conditions improved from severe drought (D2) to moderate drought (D1) in all parts of the county.

There were two snowfall total reports of 8.5 inches in both Cottonwood Falls and Strong City. Several car accidents occurred along the Kansas Turnpike, but there were no apparent injuries.

Multiple vehicular accidents occurred in the county, but no injuries were reported. Visibilities dropped to a quarter to half of a mile according to the closest airport observation Emporia (KEMP) around the times of the noted crashes.

There was no improvement to drought conditions in the county. All areas remained in severe drought (D2) with the exception of the northwest portions of the county which remained in moderate drought (D1).

A mesonet station 2 north of Matfield Green measured 5.11 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Rainfall amounts around the county ranged from 2.5 to 5.11 inches.

Chase county improved from exceptional drought (D4) and extreme drought (D3) to severe drought (D2) across the county. Only the far northwestern areas of the county improved to moderate drought (D1).

A CoCoRaHS observer measured 2.22 inches from the morning rainfall.

Emergency manager reported water flowing over ZZ Road north of Highway 50.

Law enforcement measured 2.25 inches of rain in about an hour and a half period of time.

There was a slight improvement in the northwestern areas of the county to severe drought (D2). The remainder of the county remained in extreme drought (D3) and the central portions of the county remaining in exceptional drought (D4).

Exceptional drought (D4) continued in the southwest part of the county with extreme drought (D3) continued in the remainder of the county for the month of July.
