A period of freezing rain and freezing drizzle led to icy roads, especially bridges and overpasses, and numerous accidents. Between one and two tenths of an inch of ice accumulated. Over a thousand car accidents were reported in the greater Houston area with 3 fatalities.
A 21 year old male and a 9 year old female were struck by lightning while on a soccer field at Crippen Elementary School. The male's injuries proved fatal almost one month later. The female recovered from her injuries.
Ike produced high winds and hurricane force wind gusts over Montgomery County. There were two indirect fatalities related to cutting trees and limbs. One was preparing for the storm, another after the storm.
A dead pine tree blew down in high winds and struck and killed an adult male who was 60 to 70 feet away from the base of tree. CXO ASOS at the time of this event recorded a peak wind of 27 knots.
Deaths were all associated with the evacuation for Hurricane Rita, both before and after Rita's arrival. Rita made landfall just east of the Texas/Louisiana border early Saturday morning, September 24th.
Flooding from numerous heavy rain events in April and early May led to significant damage.
Flooding was reported in the Woodbranch and New Caney areas. FM 1485 was closed near the East Fork of the San Jacinto River due flooding inundation. Highway 59 in New Caney became impassable due to floodwaters.
FM 1774 was flooded just west of Magnolia near the Montgomery and Waller County line.
