What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

This tornado occurred within a broader corridor of very strong winds. It began along the Natchez Trace near the intersection of Julius Gibbs Road and Rodney Road and continued northeastward, downing countless trees along its path. It continued across McDonald Road, passing near Lorman and near the US 61 and MS Highway 552 interchange, paralleling US 61 for a short distance. In this area, multiple homes sustained minor roof damage. The tornado weakened as it moved east of US 61, crossing Patton Road, then lifting near the Jefferson and Claiborne county line near Woodvine Road. This tornado continued into Claiborne County. Maximum estimated winds 110 MPH. Total path length 8.61 miles.

The wider storm

During the daytime hours of April 18th, a developing storm system helped generate a large line of thunderstorms which then moved across the region. From this, a regional outbreak of tornadoes along with widespread wind damage occurred. This line became efficient at producing tornadoes as a meso-scale vortex developed. The combination of multiple environmental features, set the stage for 43 tornadoes to occur over the forecast area. This ranks as 4th most for a single event across the forecast area. In addition to the tornadoes, widespread wind damage occurred as well.

Began near Brasfield (31.8086, -91.1004).
