What EF2 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF2 is considerable damage: roofs torn off well-built houses, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, consistent with estimated gusts of 111–135 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

This tornado began northwest of Utica along Thornton Road, where it produced minor tree damage. It moved northeast, strengthening after crossing MS 27 and Tom Collins Road. As it moved across Hickstown Road, Old Adams Station Road, and Adams Station Road, hundreds of trees were downed with several utility lines impacted as well. The tornado reached its peak intensity as it moved through the Learned area, where a significant percentage of trees were uprooted or snapped. Some homes experienced minor roof damage and multiple structures were impacted by fallen trees. The tornado weakened then lifted as it continued northeastward into the Oakley area. Maximum estimated winds 115 MPH.

The wider storm

During the daytime hours of April 18th, a developing storm system helped generate a large line of thunderstorms which then moved across the region. From this, a regional outbreak of tornadoes along with widespread wind damage occurred. This line became efficient at producing tornadoes as a meso-scale vortex developed. The combination of multiple environmental features, set the stage for 43 tornadoes to occur over the forecast area. This ranks as 4th most for a single event across the forecast area. In addition to the tornadoes, widespread wind damage occurred as well.

Began near Utica (32.1237, -90.6506).
