A tree fell on a home on Lafayette Street in Lufkin, killing an 80 year old woman inside. Saturated soils from recent heavy rainfall during the evening was the likely cause for the tree to fall.
A tree fell on the vehicle in the 1800 block of Dewitt Henson Road near Pollok, killing an 8 year old boy and a 3 year old boy sitting in the backseat. The two parents sitting in the front seat sustained minor injuries.

The ambient temperature in the Lufkin, Texas area during the afternoon of August 24th was 103 degrees. An infant was left inside a vehicle and was later found that afternoon deceased from the excessive heat inside the vehicle. Heat index values at the time were near 105 degrees.
The excessive heat resulted in the death of a 61 year old male during the afternoon of August 2nd. The man died of a heat stroke while outside.
Northeast Texas saw much of the same heat in July as they did in June with record or near record heat. July was the hottest month for most of northeast Texas since 1980.

A classic supercell thunderstorm moved northeastward across Angelina County, TX into Nacogdoches County, TX producing a strong tornado. Numerous structures were damaged near Central, TX, northwest of Lufkin, TX. Otherwise damage was confined to uprooted and snapped trees.
Winds were recorded at the Lufkin Airport. Reports of 150 power poles were toppled with numerous trees across homes and vehicles.

Frank Street in front of St. Luke's Memorial Hospital was flooded and closed. Ellis Avenue and Angelina Street, Ellis Avenue and Raguet Street, Kurth Drive at the Ellen Trout Drive underpass, and all of Denman Avenue inside the loop were also closed due to flooding.
