South Washington Cascades storm history

Time of incident unknown, but it was daylight when the incident occurred so used sunrise to sunset times.

Rain and snow showers occurred overnight, with clearing skies and temperatures dipping to or below freezing in the morning. A vehicle, carrying high school students on their way to school, slid and crashed into a fence and a house around 8am in the morning.

The Three Corner Rock RAWS (TRKW1) recorded a max sustained wind of 37 mph, and a peak gust of 67 mph.

The Swift Creek SNOTEL at 4440 ft recorded 19 inches of snowfall between 1700 3/19 and 2100 3/20 with 12 inches reached 1300 3/20.

The Swift Creek SNOTEL at 4440 ft recorded 21 inches of snowfall between 1500 3/14 and 2200 03/15 with 12 inches reached 0400 3/15.

The Surprise Lake SNOTEL at 4280 ft recorded 13 inches of snow between 1800 3/12 and 2000 3/13 with 12 inches hit 1930 3/13, and the Swift Creek SNOTEL at 4440 ft recorded 12 inches of snow between 1800 3/12 and 1900 3/13.

The Swift Creek SNOTEL at 4440 ft recorded 13 inches of snow between 2200 02/24 and 1500 02/25 with 12 inches hit 1100 02/25. The Pinto Rock SNOTEL at 4450 ft recorded 13 inches of snowfall between 2100 02/24 to 1200 02/25 with 12 inches hit 1200 02/25.

The swift Creek SNOTEL at 4400ft recorded 13 inches of snow between 1000 02/15 and 0800 02/17 with 12 inches of new snow recorded at 0600 02/17.

The Pinto Rock SNOTEL at 4450 ft recorded 13 inches of snowfall between 2200 01/30 and 1900 01/31 with 12 inches reached 1700 01/31.

June Lake SNOTEL at 3440 ft recorded 18 inches of snowfall with 12 inches first hit by 0700 Nov 18th and Swift Creek SNOTEL at 4440 ft recorded 15 inches of snow with 12 inches hit around 0100 Nov 18th.

The Swift Creek SNOTEL at 4400 ft recorded 14 inches of snow between 0600 PST Oct 30th and 0000 PST Nov 1st. Several other SNOTELS in the vicinity recorded 12+ inches of snow in a similar time period as well.

Peak gust of 83 mph occurred at Three Corner Rock RAWS (TRKW1) with sustained wind of 57 mph.

Many SNOTEL sites recorded 2 to 3 feet of snow with snowfall rates on the order of 3/hr. Snow of this magnitude, coupled with winds gusting 50-85 mph at pass elevation, resulted in hazardous driving conditions.

Between 16 and 24 inches of snow fell for elevations above 2500-3000 feet.

Widespread 1-2 foot snow totals were observed across the South Washington Cascades for elevations above 3000 feet.

There Corner Rock measured max wind of 62 mph and gust of 104 mph.

Most areas saw some combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Impacts were mostly from ice.

High temperatures on the 17th were in the upper 80s to around 100. Overnight temperatures were quite warm with lows in the mid 60s to mid 70s.

Snow fell in the south Washington Cascades between December 10 and 13, with accumulations of 18 to 28 inches of snow reported. During this time there was a 12 hour period where 10 to 16 inches of snow fell early on the 11th.

Heavy snow produced 10-20 of snow in the Cascades. There were two bursts of snow, each for 6-12, very consistent across the Cascades of southern Washington. Gusts 50-70 mph were common in the Cascades.

Given the reports of 10-20 inches of snow in the Gorge, and over two feet around Mount Hood, it seems reasonable that the South Washington Cascades would see similar totals or more.

The Three Corner Rock sensor (TRKW1) reported maximum winds of 53 mph gusting to 80 mph.

Surprise Lakes SNOTEL (SPLW1) measured 12 inches of snowfall in 12 hours.

Pinto Rock SNOTEL (PINW1) measured 15 inches snowfall in 10 hours.

The Big Hollow fire was declared contained on November 13, 2020 at 0900PST.

A multi-day snow event brought 18-36 inches of snow to the South Washington Cascades. The Swift Creek SNOTEL recorded 35 inches of snow during this event, along with several other sites over 18 inches.

A report of 50.9 inches of snow was observed by a CoCoRaHS observer in Trout Lake, just a mile or two from the Skamania County line. In general, reports of 18 to 30 inches of snow were more common.
