A 39 year old man was washed into the ocean by a sneaker wave and drowned at Luffenholtz Beach. Seas were were not particularly large and were not close to high surf advisory criteria but the swell was long period resulting in set behavior.

Dense fog on December 31st reduced visibility for drivers in Humboldt County. The reduction in visibility resulted in an indirect fatality when a car struck a pedestrian near Eureka, CA.
