Strong northeast winds developed due to a coastal low lingering offshore on October 12. Winds frequently gusted to 40-50 mph between 3 AM and 4 PM EST on October 12. There was a peak wind gust of 55 mph at the Elizabeth City Airport ASOS.

Although Hurricane Erin passed well offshore on August 21, the wind field was so large that northerly winds gusted to 30 to 40 miles per hour from 3 AM EST through 4 PM EST. The peak gust was 40 mph at the Elizabeth City Regional Airport ASOS around 8 AM.
