Coast Range of Nw Oregon storm history

The maximum wind recorded was 32 mph with a gust of 59 mph. The high wind caused a tree to fall on a truck on US Highway 26 at 1130 PST on the 27th, killing 3 people and injuring one. The Highway 26 was then closed for most of the day.

A couple of weather reporting stations measured wind gusts up to 65 mph. The winds downed several large trees including one that fell onto a moving vehicle resulting in a fatality.

Strong winds were reported at Cedar RAWS and Tidewater RAWS with gusts to 56 kts.

Accumulations of snow and ice varied considerably. Combined with the mixed precipitation were temperatures in the teens and twenties.

Can likely assume the east slopes of the Coast Range had similar ice accumulations as western portions. In fact there was a CoCoRaHS report of 0.50 inch ice.

Around 6 to 18 inches of snow fell, mostly in a 12 hour period in the North Oregon Coast Range. Even the Coast Range valleys were hit hard. Vernonia reported 6 inches of snow.

Can infer high winds occurred within the north Coast Range by reports from WAZ020 and ORZ004, where gusts to 65 mph were measured.

Strong south winds were reported in the Coast Range of Northwest Oregon. Mt. Hebo (AR658) had a maximum sustained wind of 38 mph with a peak gust to 85 mph.

A prolonged winter weather event occurred across the Pacific Northwest during the Christmas holiday, resulting in significant travel issues across the coast range. Several SNOTELs reported 14 to 28 inches of snow through the period.

The Mount Hebo sensor (AR658) reported a wind of 40 mph gusting to 83 mph.

The Mount Hebo (AR658) location recorded a max sustained wind of 48 mph with a max wind gust of 92 mph.

The Tidewater RAWS (TWRO3) recorded a peak gust of 59 mph. Also, Mount Hebo, elevation 3000 feet, recorded sustined winds of 43 mph and a gust of 83 mph. There were also reports of a downed power line and power outages in Grande Ronde due to high winds.

While little-to-no snow fell at lower elevations, Seine Creek SNOTEL around 2000 feet recorded 8 inches of snow in a 7-hour period.

A range of 6 to 12 inches of snow was observed above 1000 feet elevation.

ODOT weather stations recorded 6-7 inches of snow at summits through the Coast Range. Also had reports via Social Media and CoCoRaHS of 7-8.5 inches of snow near North Plains and on Dixie Mtn.

A Bonneville Power Association weather station on top of Mount Hebo recorded peak gusts up to 64 mph.

Weather stations in higher terrain saw the strongest winds, with gusts up to 73 mph at the Newberg/Chehalem Mountain weather station and wind gusts up to 66 mph on Mt Hebo.

The weather station at Mt Hebo at an elevation of 3500 feet recorded wind gusts up to 71 mph. In an adjacent zone, Rockhouse RAWS station recorded wind gusts of 59 mph.

At higher elevations, the Saddle Mountain SNOTEL reported 25 inches of snow. Lower in the Coast Range there were reports of 12 inches at Sunset Summit, 7 inches in Mist, and 6 inches in Vernonia.

The Tidewater RAWS site recorded a peak gust of 62 mph.

Storm spotter in Banks reported 12 inches of snow.

South Fork RAWS recorded 0.89 inches of liquid equivalent while temperatures were well below freezing, suggesting substantial icing in some of the valleys in the Coast Range of Northwest Oregon.

Generally 3 to 6 inches of snow reported, with 6 inches of snow at Wilson River Summit and on Chehalem Mountain.
