Westmoreland Ridges storm history

Widespread snowfall, generally exceeding advisory criteria but falling short of warning criteria, fell across the county with amounts ranging from 3-5 inches and the highest total of 5.5 inches reported by the public 4 miles north-northeast of Ligonier.

Widespread snow accumulation generally ranging from 8 to 12 inches in general was reported across the the ridges of Westmoreland County with the highest total of 12 inches near Donegal.

PennDOT sensors recorded gusts above 35 MPH and frequent drops to 1/4 mile or less visibility between 230 PM and 8 PM along Laurel Ridge.

The coldest conditions were noted during the morning of the 22nd. Temperatures dropped as low as -14F, with reported wind chill values as low as -20F on an isolated basis.

A total of 6 to 10 inches of snow fell, with the high total near Ligonier.

A total of 5.5 inches fell at Derry, with a few other totals in the 2 to 4 inch range reported.

Reported storm totals included 15 inches near Champion and 8 inches at New Florence.

A total of 7.3 inches of snow was reported at Laurel Mountain, while 7 inches was reported at Jones Mills.

Convective snow showers the evening of December 18th caused 1 to 3 inches of snow in portions of western PA.

Dangerous wind chills accompanied a low pressure system on December 23th. Lowest wind chill values occurred early afternoon on December 23rd, temperatures were below zero and gusts were 30 to 35mph. Minimum wind chill values across western PA were near -35F.

A prolong period of freezing rain on the morning of December 15th in the ridges of Westmoreland County created three tenths of ice to accumulate on surfaces. Highest report was made in Wilpen, PA.

Ligonier received a total of 1.7 inches of snow, with other locations generally around an inch or less.

Five to 10 inches of snow was reported, with the highest total at Ligonier.

Up to 0.30 inches of ice accumulated along Laurel Summit.

A trained spotter measured 0.25 of ice 1 miles southeast of Laurel Mountain. Ligonier received 0.10 inches of ice. One to two inches of snow was reported on the morning of 2/11/19.

Surrounding areas had wind chill values below -25 F.

Three to five inches of snow fell across the ridges in 24 hours. A quarter of an inch of ice also accumulated in regions the evening of November 15th.
