Lower Columbia Basin storm history

A multi-car pile up from a dust storm on I-84 resulted in some injuries and a fatality.

Snow and ice covered roads contributed to a two car accident that lead to one fatality. This accident occurred at 2:45 pm at a location 2 miles east of Irrigon on Highway 730.

Icy roads caused a one car accident on Interstate-82 near Hermiston. The car slid off the road, rolled several times, and ejected the passenger. The driver sustained minor injuries and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

A brush fire started north of Hermiston around 1500 PDT and resulted in evacuations within the area. The fire also spread to a grass lot, with media photos showing several school buses destroyed.

The Hermiston ASOS, along with co-op stations C2444 in Echo and C1075 in Boardman, reported subfreezing temperatures between 4am and 8am on the morning of the 25th.

The ASOS KHRI at the Hermiston Municipal Airport reported temperatures at to below freezing between 0305 to 0540 PDT on April 19th. The mesonet station ECHO reported temperatures at to below freezing between 0300 to 0515 PDT on April 19th.

The ASOS KHRI at the Hermiston Municipal Airport reported at to below freezing temperatures between 0510 to 0625 PDT on April 15th. The RAWS station UMTO3 Umatilla reported at to below freezing temperatures between 0429 to 0629 PDT on April 15th.

The ASOS at the Hermiston Municipal Airport, OR measured a wind gust of 61 mph at 0201 PST on February 21st. A trained spotter in Irrigon, OR measured a wind gust of 50mph at 2230 PST that also produced damage to roof shingles.

The mesonet station ODT44 measured a gust of 63mph at 2351PDT November 4th, and the ASOS KHRI measure a gust of 60mph at 0024PDT November 5th.

A mesonet station 8 miles WSW of Echo, OR measured a non-tstm wind gust of 69 mph at 7:46pm PDT on March 28th. The ASOS KHRI at the Hermiston Municipal Airport, OR measured a non-tstm wind gust of 68 mph at 7:40pm PDT on March 28th.

A Cocorahs observer 1 mile WSW of Umatilla, OR measured 6 inches of snow at 7:00am PST on Feb.13th. A public report originating from Hermiston, OR indicated 6 inches of snowfall between 6:00pm PST on Feb. 12th and 8:30am PST on Feb. 13th with a total of 9 inches so far.

A non-tstm wind gust of 62mph was measured 8 miles WSW of Echo, OR at 2:30AM PST on Jan. 13th. A non-tstm wind gust of 60mph was measured at the ASOS at the Hermiston Municipal Airport at 3:53AM PST Jan. 13th.

Wildfire occurred near Umatilla River Bridge near Umatilla, in the Power City area. Interstate 82 was closed for a period of time between MP1 and MP10.

High temperature peaked at 110 degrees on the afternoon of July 30 at KHRI.

Measured peak gust of 64 mph occurred at the Hermiston airport in Umatilla county. Also power outages occurred in the town of Umatilla to the northwest.

Measured snow fall of 4.5 inches at Echo, in Umatilla county. Elevation 640 feet.

Measured heavy snow accumulation of 6 inches, 2 miles north of Hermiston.

In addition this was the zone that had a multi-car pile up with a fatality. The fatality will be logged into the dust storm report for this zone.
