Catastrophic flash flooding began in Wyoming County in the Mehoopany and Forkston areas. Numerous roads, homes and bridges were severely damaged.
Record flooding occurred along the Susquehanna River near Meshoppen, PA. The river crested at 44.42 feet on September 8, 2011 at 4:15 PM. The previous record of 43.51 feet was from the June 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood.
Major flash flooding reported. Almost 100 homes either flooded or surrounded by water. Hundreds of people evacuated with two people rescued from the high waters. Dozens of roads were washed out, damaged and/or closed during the height of the flash flood.
Heavy rain with amounts of 5 to 7 inches caused flash flooding. The rain which fell from the 16th to the 18th was due to the remnants of hurricane Ivan. 500 homes and 30 businesses were damaged. 50 water rescues were reported. The hardest hit areas were Tunkhannock, Eaton Townshi…
