Heavy convective precipitation combined with glacial melt from the Whitney Glacier on Mount Shasta to create a debris flow down Whitney Creek, downstream from the Lava Fire scar. This resulted in the closure of US97 between 1700 PDT and 2100 PDT.

Recently burned areas in northern California were soaked by 1-3 inches of rain on 09/24/2014. Mudslides and debris flows were witnessed by personnel working the fire. Numerous rocks were reported on area roads, including California highway 96 from Scott River to Beaver Creek.

The Klamath Falls Herald and News reported extensive wind, rain, and hail damage to crops around Butte Valley and Tulelake. Crop damage included 1400 acres of strawberry root stock and several alfalfa and potato fields. No cost estimate is available at this time.

An incident meteorologist working in the Uncles Fire Camp reported that two feet of water flowed through a nearby wash, damaging the camp laundry facilities. This occurred 35 miles southeast of Somes Bar. This water came from a thunderstorm occurring nearby.

Spotter SY135 7 W Montague reported .75 inch hail with a thunderstorm.

Spotter SY50 just east of Happy Camp reported 3/4 inch hail.

Spotter SY32 in Happy Camp reported strong winds with light rain, 1.5 inch thick branches were broken off of trees.

A spotter 2 SSW of Fort Jones reported quarter size hail and 0.75 inches of rain in 15 minutes from a thunderstorm.

WSR-88D recorded precipitation rates of 3-5 inches/hour over the warning area. This value was likely polluted by hail, but it was thought that the precipitation rates were still signficant. The storm was slow moving and remained over the Beaver Creek basin for a long time.
